Alaska & The Yukon

At 365 million acres, Alaska is so large that if you saw 1 million acres per day, it would take you a year to see all of the state. Thirty-nine mountain ranges, 100,000 glaciers, 16 national parks, 17 of the tallest peaks on the continent, and incredible wildlife; now that’s overwhelming! You want to see the best of it all, but there’s so much information.

Where do you start? Right here, with Above & Beyond Travel. Ever Heard of Chicken, Alaska? PDF Print E-mail

You probably have never heard of the Alaskan towns of Tok, Chicken or Eagle, but they will certainly give you an insider’s view of the wilderness in Alaska.  Sorry, Tok is but a whistle stop, but it does offer a wonderful visitors center and the service at the Westmark Hotel is incredible.  Be sure to try the Mexican food and the margaritas!

Chicken is a short rest stop but do not miss the unique gift shop and bar. There are quite a few interesting items attached to the bar ceiling and the owners had the nerve to leave their names.  However, there is a bakery and if you are a chocolate chip cookie connoisseur, then these are not to be missed.

Eagle is a bit larger than Chicken and offers scenic views of the Yukon River from its banks.  The main attraction here is the start of the Yukon Queen II cruise; a wonderful experience on the river the gold miners experienced so many years ago.
